June
Admittedly, I've been listening to a lot less music in June than I usually do for whatever reason that may be, regardless though, there are still a few new releases I've really enjoyed, for the most part that being singles as opposed to new albums.
Sports Team - Deep Down Happy
I had high expectations for this album, as I'm sure many of you know that I'm a pretty big Sports Team fan and have been following them for a little while. Although the album as a whole didn't disappoint, it is a little bit annoying that eight of the twelve tracks on the album had already been released before, as I was really looking forward to a few more brand new tracks. I guess this doesn't affect the quality of the tracks individually though as all of them are good, and I do like that a few of the tracks feature Rob on vocals as well as front-man Alex. I will say though that I prefer the older version of 'Camel Crew' to the new recording as the slightly more 'rough around the edges' sound appeals to me more. My favourite on the album has to be 'Here's The Thing' which I've pretty much had on repeat since it came out, but 'Feels Like Fun' is also up there.
For me, Sports Team are a breath of fresh air in the British indie genre that's growing increasingly stale and their live shows have been some of the most enjoyable gigs I've attended.
This new single by WARGASM is really great, there are so many different sounds inside this one track that it shouldn't work, but it really does. This is especially apparent in the bridge which is different enough to be its own song, however within this track it gives a moment of near-calm before the final chorus kicks in again. The music this band make is so appropriate for the state of the world today and I think this is really reflected in their lyrics as well as their quite angry sound. I have a bit of a thing for duos in music, especially live when they make fairly heavy music, and WARGASM are absolutely no exception to this. Although this is not my favourite track by the band, I've still been listening to it a lot and am very excited to see what they release in the future as well as watch them hopefully gain the bigger following they deserve.
Poppy's cover of the hugely popular 2002 hit by Russian duo t.A.T.u is one of my favourite's this month. Poppy uses enough of her own style to change the track and give it a similar sound to her own music while still keeping it close enough to the original track in sound as well as meaning of the song. As an artist I find Poppy incredibly engaging as an artist and may do a post about her soon as the evolution of her music for various reasons is very interesting.
Maybe my favourite of the new Creeper tracks, and if not definitely my second. I will say though that I don't think all of the pre-released singles from their new concept album have been great but there are a few I really like and I'm still looking forward to hearing the album in full later this month. Front-man Will Gould described the record as 'really varied, really different' so I guess it figures that not every track will be to everyone's taste, but this single opening the album will definitely set it off to a promising start, with its fast tempo and catchy lyrics as well as the fairly loud repetitive drum beat in the verses, it easily gets stuck in your head. I really recommend Creeper to any MCR fans as I personally think there are a lot of similarities between their music, including the vocals.
The highly anticipated new single by Bring Me The Horizon also didn't disappoint. I think they've blended many of the different sounds they've tried over time to create a track that sounds very modern due to the electronic elements whilst appealing to some of their older fans too that were maybe alienated by tracks like 'mother tongue' on amo. A lot of people have said that this track reminds them of the Sempiternal era of the band however personally I don't hear this very much.
The first verse of this song in particular is quite reminiscent of the verses in the song 'heavy metal' from amo but as the song progresses it gets much heavier, and coincidentally I also think the track gets much better as it goes on. I really like how this band switch from the heavier vocals into much softer moments and this is clearly apparent between the breakdown and the final chorus. My main issue with the track is that I find some of the lyrics a little bit cringe, but the breakdown's so good I'm willing to look past it.
